HNC Photography Portraiture

In my first year of HND Photography, I explored portrait photography, focusing on both on-location flash and studio lighting. My projects included an Environmental Portrait, High Key, Mid Key, and Low Key Lighting, a Magazine Cover Shot, an Interior Portrait, and a Social Diptych.

I intended to photograph a friend for the Environmental Portrait, who was constructing bike jumps. However, due to scheduling conflicts, I used my dad as the model instead. It was my initial experience in balancing natural light with flash.

The studio lighting project involved High Key, Mid Key, and Low Key Lighting techniques. My High Key photo of my dad was among my best during my HNC. My sister modelled for the Mid Key and Low Key photos, with the Mid Key turning out particularly well.

For the Magazine Cover Shot, I drew inspiration from TIME magazine’s style, framing and colouring from my research. I had my dad pose without his glasses for this shot to limit reflections.

The Interior Portraits were connected to my fifth Architecture Task. Initially, my dad was a stand-in for setting up the shot, but the images were so strong that they both were used.

Lastly, I created a Social Diptych featuring my friend from the Environmental Portrait, this time at Livingston skatepark. I aimed to blend a portrait with an action shot in a social setting, and the colour grading was designed to emulate colour film

In my first year of HND Photography, I tackled portrait photography with a mix of natural and studio lighting. I took on various projects like shooting environmental portraits and experimenting with high, mid, and low key lighting. I even tried creating a magazine cover shot and a social diptych. I learned to balance flash with daylight and got better at editing. It was a hands-on experience that really improved my photography skills.
